MHZ mystic 114 SAW build

Post by keithbradley on Sat Apr 13, 2013 6:34 pm

Hey guys pirat

This is a personal build of mine. I just recently finished it and will be running it in our upcoming SAW event here in the U.S.
To be honest the work done is not perhaps as thorough as the builds I do for customers. I built this boat in a rush, and I was not very pleased with the components when I first started, so I didn't put as much effort into it as I should have. I planned on lots of carbon fiber reiforcements in the boat, but in the end I just ended up slapping it together. I will be "taking it easy" running, trying my best not to crash, as it likely won't survive many high speed crashes.

I'm running 8s 5000mah 65c Dinogys on each side to (2) Swordfish Pro+ 240HV ESCs, powering (2) Lehner 2250 motors. I have a wide assortment of props I will be running on this one, starting with octura x442, and going all the way up to octura x457s that have been cut down. I also have some propshop and ABC 2 and 3 blade props that may work well.

There were a few mods done to this boat to improve my chances, the most important of which is was modifying the stingers. Stock MHZ stingers will not allow you to run anywhere near neutral, so I made some changes to allow me to start with a neutral angle. I will likely end up moving them back towards negative, but I like starting at zero so I can tune the boat from there.

The current record in the IMPBA is only 76.844mph, so as long as the weather is decent it will be easy to break. The question is how fast can I go without crashing? Shocked

I will be bringing some spares...just in case.
So far the Swordfish ESCs have proven themselves in my boats. I actually set the record last year using a pair of Swordfish 240 ESCs, but because of a silly rule they did not make my record official. So this year, I am going back with a vengence to get what it rightfully mine. Cool

Yes, they are the new Swordfish 240HV Pro+ that we sell in our webstore:
http://www.keithbradleyboats.com/?wpsc_product_category=escs-becs-and-accessories

240A continuous, full data logging, and completely water proof. I've only been running about 200A through them on 8s, but they perform flawlessly so far...we will see how they do at 300A.

There was a 15-20mph crosswind today, and of course the waves were going in the direction (much worse than hitting them head on). I couldn't get a full pull out of it where I felt comfortable, and it eventually got pretty sketchy on one pass, so I pulled the plug and aborted for the day. Much more speed to come.
However, a friend was taking video, so I figured I would upload it to youtube to give everyone a look

Thanks! This run was only wth x442 props. Next will be with larger props, then once I get it running well with those I will go up in prop size again. It should be quite fast on smooth water.

I have much more aggressive props here that I will be trying.

It ran 89mph with 442s and 10 deg. of timing.

I was trying 14 deg. of timing today, but just couldn't hold full throttle in that choppy water...only hit 85mph, but I think it will be 90+ when the water is flat.
Once I get it running perfect with x442s and squeeze out all the speed I can, I will move up in prop size.

It's been windy here, but I got up early this morning since the forecast showed early morning being the only time that mild weather was a possibility. I caught the lake in a calm period for about an hour, and made a few runs. Here's one with 3 Blade props, 41mm diameter. Speed in this run was 99.4mph, or 160km/h.

I tried propping up a bit more, but I found out that I had a drive dog slipping on the shaft, and by the time I got it fixed, the wind was quite strong so I stopped for the day.

Next runs will be with x447props.

very nice keith....you have a lot of prop number to 'load the motors' so i think that after x447 that is good idea! the next props for me (2240-8 lehner on 6 -7 S on an hpr c5009) is the prop shop 50/18/2!!!! but the speed must be in a good area, with smooth water!!!!! what kv is those 2250?? in my 2240-8 (1850kv ) i play 6 or 7 s but in the future i will try 8 s for sort periods, and only for one -two times? greetings, stelios.

Hi Keith,

what pitch did those 3-blade props have? 160km/h is already a good result. If I remember correctly you have 2250/5, with 6S and X447 that should be 200+ which is a little motivated for a Mystic 1140?

@ Stelios: 5018/2 ?? Its your risk but already with X447 and 7S you should be able to exceed 160km/h. With those PropShops maybe 190+ (on paper)

regards,
Manuel

Hey guys...just an update. I set a new IMPBA record last weekend (the old record was only 76.844mph). I ran a fast pass of 110.783mph and a two-way average of 109.4mph.

Here's a vid:
